Beware of “www.Tagged.com” Scam
One of the latest phishing scams circumnavigating the internet these days comes from the url “www.tagged.com”. This highly-organized scam arrives in your inbox via a friend or an acquaintance’s email address. The email reads that the sender would like to share photos with you via the website “tagged.com”. The financial experts at Thrive.com say “Quickly delete [the email], and inform the friend that sent it to you that their email account has been compromised.”
Here’s what the email may look like:
![]()
If you do click either yes or no you’ll be taken to another page which will ask you for personal information, from email account passwords to credit card information.
![]()
Thrive.com says:
There is always a risk in giving out your personal information. But never, ever give out your passwords or financial information online. No reputable business would ask for it in this way.

Since I have been “hooked” by this nasty scam how do I get removed from their records. They sent their scam to everyone in my address book. Do I have any recourse?

William,
I’m really sorry to hear that. Unfortunately I’m not sure at the moment — but I’ll certainly do some research for you. The exposure of your address book is one of the fundamentals of this scam.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune, I’ll let you know when I find out more.
Thanks for sharing your story,

Vani,
Sorry to hear that. I found a website by searching “tagged.com scam” on google. Here is the link: http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/phishing_Tagged_dot_com.php.
This site offers some suggestions about what you can do about it, who to talk to, how to fix the problem, etc.
Hope this helps, thanks for commenting,

if anyone has information about privacy violations concerning tagged.com, or any company associated with that company, feel free to contact me at: malleylaw@gmailcom
I am a privacy attorney reviewing the matter.
The lottery issue noted above is interesting and I have not heard that noted concerning this matter. How many companies ar working with tagged.com related to advertising etc? If anyone has any applications downloaded while on tagged.com, I really would want that info.

Thanks for commenting. Did you hear NY Attorney General Cuomo is suing tagged? We have a blog post from last week that discusses Tagged.com’s CEO’s explanation of the problem.
Do you buy their explanation of what happened?

Robert,
Thanks for commenting. Is this postal mail or email?
I can’t tell you what to do but it sounds shady to me. Why would your email account need to be credited? Emails have little to do with money. I would go online and A.) check if that’s even their real address and B.) hit the “contact us” button on Tagged.com and send them an email telling them of the message. I wouldn’t respond to this.
Good luck,

You got rocks in your head. did you even resuarch this? I guess you wouldn’t know this is not a scam. the true reason why you would of recieved this mail is because the sender gave tagged.com their email address and password. the page you go to is a sign up page to join a legal social networking site. You are asked for your email address and password only to invite your contacts to join. exactly as you do when you sign up for Myspace, FaceBook and all the other social networking sites. But don’t take my word for it. Greg Tseng CEO of Tagged inc explanes it in much better detail. http://blog.tagged.com/?p=4

hi, all I’ve ever done is talk to people. I’ve never spent a penny on anything, I’ve never played any games like lotteries or anything like that. I’ve only made friends with 2 people, my daughter being one of them. Another person who I was about to make friends with is actually the brother of an old boyfriend from almost 30 years ago, but it is difficult to recognize him and I approached him asking him about who he was, if his last name was actually who I thought he might be. Is this sort of activity a problem or is it just in the area of money and ID?

Susan,
Sorry I can’t say for sure. I think asking someone to confirm their identity online would be a smart thing so you don’t get duped. But I don’t really know much more than that, I’m not a tagged user or a big social networker.

September 14th, 2009 at 7:46 am
I should say, be careful with the people you talk to, they are the ones who would fool and lure you to send them money. I had one who even sent a picture of his son ,therefore I thought he was for real, then he started asking for money for some business he wants to start for “our” family..I bailed out right away even though he sounded for real.

Thanks for sharing Cory. From just what I’ve heard, it seems Tagged is like any website out there, in the fact that they are open to phishing, scams, and the like. There is supposedly a FaceBook scam out there now. I actually received one of those spam emails from Facebook saying that a friend “invited” me to join, but they never did.
Hope to hear from you again soon,
Tim
September 14th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Hey Dawn,
I was just telling Cory that a friend of mine sent me a email that looked as though it came from FaceBook. The email said my friend was inviting me to join, but when I asked her, she said she never did anything of the sort.
The internet is open to a host of dangers for all who use it.

I will like to confirm to you that am oblige to transact this business with you, i need your assistance to stand as a beneficiary to the sum of $17..8 millions united State Dollars lying down unclaimed in our bank, what really happened is that during the course of our auditing last week, I discovered a floating fund in an account opened in the bank in the year 2000 and since 2001 nobody has operated on this account again, after going through some old files in the records I discovered that the owner of the account died without a [Heir/WILL] hence the money is floating and if I do not remit this money out urgently it will be forfeited for nothing.

I was actually invited by my significant other to join Tagged and all of the so-called “phishing” where the website is asking for deeper personal information is optional to answer. If you are all stupid enough to actually fill it all out and then have the balls to whine about it, then you have no business being on the internet at all. I have had my problems with Tagged Inc, but we have worked them out and we are on friendly terms again as a result of both sides LISTENING to each other.
Now go whine a b***** somewhere else and grow the f*** up already!
September 18th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Shawna,
Glad your problem got worked out. Yet, you said it yourself, you invited your significant other to join Tagged. Now say you didn’t, but he or she got one of these “phishing” emails that said you did. Would you still be calling them stupid if they filled it out? People are much more suseptable when they receive something from a “trusted” source.
But, your right in the sense that you have to be extremely careful on the internet.
Thanks,
Tim

MY FIANCEE IS POSTING THIS TO EVERY SITE, FORUM, COMPLAINT SITES, ETC. AND WE MUST HELP STOP TAGGED FROM WASTING SO MANY PEOPLES TIME. SEARCH IT IN ALL THE SEARCH ENGINES AND YOU WILL SEE TAGGED IS BEING BLOCKED IN PLACES AS THEY STEAL YOUR FRIENDS AND INFORMATION. HERE IT IS:
TAGGED.COM SUCKS! THEY DELETED MY PROFILE. ALL THE MESSAGES AND COMMENTS FROM MY FIANCEE AS WELL AS ALL THE COMMENTS I SEARCHED MANY HOURS FOR… ALL OF IT… GONE!. 2500 plus friends. all comments, pics, pic comments, journal, messages … everything! GONE!
TAGGED DID THIS TWICE!! TAGGED CANNOT BE TRUSTED! GET OUT AND GO TO A REAL SITE BEFORE IT HAPPENS TO YOU… YES I LIKED TAGGED. BUT WHEN U LOSE ALL YOUR STUFF… ESPECIALLY THE NEXT TIME …YOU WILL HATE TAGGED FOR WASTING YOUR TIME. IF YOU CREATE ANOTHER SITE THEN THEY PUT A BLOCK ON YOUR COMPUTER SO YOU HAVE TO ENTER CAPTCHA TO DO ANYTHING.. and yes I was an active member and had a few decent friends. The other 90% were mostly scammers and fakes. All of my decent friends are leaving there because as others have said in many places, it’s mostly lowlifes anyway so why even bother with a failing scammer site. And by the way, it was a Christian based site with christian music by Michael W. Smith and Chris Tomlin, etc. One of the cleanest sites on tagged! With so much nudity and even people being killed from meeting members you would think a decent guy had a chance.
WIKIPEDIA SAYS THE FOLLOWING ABOUT TAGGED.COM:
A TIME magazine article called Tagged “The World’s Most Annoying Website”.[22] Tagged asks users for their email username and password, checks their email address books for contacts and repeatedly sends email invitations to people who are not yet on Tagged, stating that they have been “added as a friend” or that the inviter had sent them photos on Tagged. This process has drawn criticism in the technology press[23][24] and from users.[25] These emails were discussed as possible spam by Black Web 2.0.[26] The resemblance to a virus has often been mentioned, including by urban legend site Snopes.com.[27] The New York Times referred to the practice as “contact scraping” [28]
In July 2009 New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced his intention to sue Tagged.com for “deceptive email marketing and invasion of privacy” [29] According to the press release, Tagged.com engaged in “deceptive Email Promotions, Identity Theft, and Invasion of Privacy ”
Prior to co-founding Tagged, Greg Tseng was co-founder and CEO of internet incubator Jumpstart Technologies.[30] In March 2006, Jumpstart Technologies settled with the Federal Trade Commission on alleged violations of the CAN-SPAM Act, which included a $900,000 fine but no admission of guilt.[31]
From February 2009, Tagged.com has been blocked in Qatar by the only ISP, Qtel, after a number of complaints from the public.[32] Tagged.com had been one of the 10 most visited sites in Qatar.[33]

First of all, much of what I’m reading is not a problem with Tagged perse, but rather gullible people.
Let’s be real, if you’ve been on the internet or have watched tv for at least a year, we’ve all heard about these scams & phishing schemes.
If someone, ANYONE tells you that you’ve won a lottery that you NEVER entered & proceeds to ask you for your personal information, then you should be immediately suspicious about such a thing & recognize that you’re being scammed & not by Tagged.
These scams are quite easy to spot, VERY EASY. For example, someone who’s been on Tagged for over a year yet has exactly ONE friend & a bunch of page views…well, it doesn’t take much sense to recognize that thisd is likely someone who’s trying to get you to view their webcam exploits.
A video of a half-naked girl on someone’s page? Most likely to lure to get you to click on that video so that you’ll be redirected to a porn site or a dating site featuring naked girls.
Even the Nigerian scammers are easy to spot. If someone’s profile tells you that they’re from California, but the yahoo address that they post has .au or something like that, then they’re NOT FOR AMERICA!
And use some sense. What half-naked girl with an obviously fake picture is really looking for love on ANY internet site?
A mind’s a terrible thing to waste & some folks need to try to use theirs before they lose them.

Re. hallo hey some one send me this Says:
September 15th, 2009 at 4:41 am
Come on mate, do you REALLY believe that that correspondence came from Tagged?
Have you still not heard of PHISHING?
Just because I send you an email which CLAIMS to be from Tagged, doesn’t necessarily make it so. If you read the wording of the email, it’s certainly not worded as an American would speak.
For example, there’s this sentence:
“This promotion is the 1st of its kind and we intend to sensitize the public.”
This is no condom commercial & no American would use the word ’sensitize’ in this context. And no LEGITIMATE lottery would be asking you for a check so that they could send you a bigger one. It would make more sense that since you’ve won, that they’d simply deduct any fee from your winnings & sent you the rest.
Serioiusly folks, use your common sense, or simply check out a few websites such as Urban Legends or Snopes in order to keep up with the latest scams.
Worst of all, most of thew scams that I’m reading here are more than 10 years old & for anyone surfing the internet to not know that is downright sinful.
