The DC Tea Party
by Tim Manni
While we don’t want to harp on the Tea Party phenomenon, it’s becoming apparent from the new groups forming that there’s a lot of anger and frustration out there — and that it’s manifesting itself in a growing number of public protests.
The latest group, the New American Tea Party, bills itself as “the official Washington, D.C. Tea Party blog.” The group is planning “an event happening on February 27, at 12 pm, permits pending.”
Though the event is sponsored by a number of groups, including the National Taxpayers Union, the NATP’s ‘About Us’ statement notes that
This isn’t a conservative or liberal thing.
This is about government forking over billions of dollars, OUR MONEY, to businesses that should have failed. This is about taking money from responsible people and handing it over to CEOs who squandered their own.
We are not opposing any specific legislation or politician. We are instead addressing the broader philosophical implications of a government that has grown too large and too distant from the very citizens it taxes. This is scary stuff.
There’s also a list of links on the site to “Tea Parties Near You,” which currently includes Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; Fayetteville, North Carolina; Houston, Texas; Kansas City, Kansas; Philadelphia, PA; and Washington, D.C.
