“www.Tagged.com” Settles With NY & Texas

Our readers are still commenting on our original post about www.Tagged.com, even though the story was written some five months ago. The email phishing scam involving Tagged.com quickly caught the attention of N.Y. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo who claimed that the website was responsible for “deceptive email marketing practices and invasion of privacy.”

While Cuomo announced his intentions to sue the third-ranked social networking site, no lawsuits were ever filed, according to the New York Times. Despite no official lawsuits being filed, Tagged.com did in fact end up settling disputes with both New York and Texas: Read the rest of this entry »

Scam Alerts: Facebook Hacks and A “Lying Locksmith”

Facebook Hacks

According to WebProNews.com (WPN), Panda Labs — a security company — discovered a web service that will hack into Facebook accounts for a $100 fee. Panda Labs claims that the service will provide “clients” with the email and password information to the desired account:

“The service’s real purpose may be hacking Facebook accounts as they say, or profiting from those that want to try the service,” says PandaLabs Technical Director Luis Corrons. “In any case, the Web page is very well designed. It is easy to contract the service and become either the victim of an online fraud, or a cyber-criminal and accomplice in identity theft. Once an intruder hacks into a Facebook account, all personal data published on the site can be stolen.”

The Latest on Tagged.com

The latest twist to the controversy surrounding www.Tagged.com occurred last week when two California residents sued the social networking site. Miriam Slater and Sara Golden are seeking a class-action lawsuit against the social networking site, claiming that the website violated “various laws including the federal Stored Communications Act and Computer Fraud and Abuse Act”:

“Tagged harvested millions of email addresses from the email address books of consumers,” states the complaint, which was filed Wednesday in federal court in San Francisco. “Then, using these consumers’ email account credentials, Tagged sent unsolicited advertisements to the harvested email addresses, making the messages appear as if they were invitations to join Tagged sent by persons known to the recipients.”

Tagged.com Fires Back At Cuomo’s Lawsuit

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday that his office intends to sue the social networking site www.Tagged.com for “deceptive email marketing practices and invasion of privacy.”

Back on June 8 we warned our readers to be aware of the email scam that was invading millions of consumers’ inboxes. The email read that the sender would like to share photos with you via the website “Tagged.com”. Concerns arose when the senders began complaining that they had never sent the emails. Both the senders and those whom received the emails immediately suspected that their email addresses had been compromised.

Beware of “www.Tagged.com” Scam

One of the latest phishing scams circumnavigating the internet these days comes from the url “www.tagged.com”. This highly-organized scam arrives in your inbox via a friend or an acquaintance’s email address. The email reads that the sender would like to share photos with you via the website “tagged.com”. The financial experts at Thrive.com say “Quickly delete [the email], and inform the friend that sent it to you that their email account has been compromised.”

Here’s what the email may look like:

If you do click either yes or no you’ll be taken to another page which will ask you for personal information, from email account passwords to credit card information.
